Wind Speed

Wind speed is the measurement of the distance a mass of air travels over a period of time. Wind speed is measured by an instrument called an anemometer, which typically consists of three or four cups mounted horizontally. When wind blows on the cups the anemometer spins. The number of revolutions (or single turns around an axis) over a period of time is proportional to the wind's velocity. Other types of anemometers include turbine, hot wire,

Wind speed is typically measured in meters per second (m/s) which is a Standard International unit of measurement. To gain a better understanding of wind speed, it sometimes helps to convert meters per second to miles per hour

1 meter (m) = 0.00062 mile (mi)
1 mile (mi) = 1,609.344 meters (m)
1 hour (hr) = 3600 seconds (s)

Problems

Using an anemometer, you measure the wind speed to be 6 m/s. What would the measurement be if converted to mph?

Access data from the Annex Weather Station Wind Speed and Annex Wind Turbine Speed. Data from these areas are given in meters per second. Convert their speeds to miles per hour.
